Behind the Designer: Discovering the origins of Maazi's unique jewelry

We’re back again with our Behind the Designer series looking deeper into the brands of jewelry we admire.

This time, we’re exploring: Maazi. It is a one-of-a-kind jewelry brand, informed by decades of knowledge from sorting treasures in a historic pawnshop. With a focus on upcycling and recycling, Maazi creates timeless jewelry that considers the planet. With the aim to “unveil the hidden stories of hidden treasures”, the brand creatively transforms vintage pieces into new and dynamic jewelry - incorporating lab-grown diamonds for an extra layer of innovation.

We’re glad to embark on this journey to learn more about Maazi, with Maazi’s founder and Creative Director, John Leung.

We know you are connected to a historic pawn shop in Hong Kong. Could you please share a bit of your journey from a pawn shop to a jewelry storefront? Why jewelry?

The genesis of Maazi Jewelry can be traced back to my quest for a diamond necklace. Upon uncovering a trove of vintage jewelry within my grandpa's pawn shop, I envisioned a transformation of these timeless pieces into modern designs, laying the foundation for the Maazi brand. The decision to delve into jewelry was fuelled by a passion for preserving heritage while infusing it with contemporary flair.

“Maazi distinguishes itself through a design ethos centered around sharing authentic narratives and fostering deeper connections with those who wear our creations.”

What inspired the name Maazi?

Maazi, derived from an ancient numeral system used by Hong Kong pawnbrokers, serves as a conduit for unveiling treasures and stories. Our journey began by breathing new life into forgotten jewelry from pawnshops, evolving into a commitment to sustainable jewelry production.

What sets Maazi’s jewelry apart from the rest of the jewelry landscape?

Maazi distinguishes itself through a design ethos centered around sharing authentic narratives and fostering deeper connections with those who wear our creations. Our commitment to repurposing vintage pieces and embracing sustainable practices adds a unique layer to each design, creating jewelry that goes beyond aesthetics.

What values does Maazi have regarding responsible jewelry making?

Our commitment to responsible jewelry-making is anchored in the ethical sourcing of gemstones. We started our journey with reclaimed diamonds from pawnshops and expanded into the realm of lab-grown stones through collaborations with The Future Rocks. Conscious choices extend to our packaging, such as dust bags made from dead-stock fabric sourced from factories.

“The decision to create the Gummy Bear collection stems from a desire to craft a whimsical and enchanting journey for our customers...we aim to create a heartfelt connection with our customers, allowing them to find meaning and resonance in the jewelry that accompanies them through their own life stories.”

We love the Gummy Bear collection. Lots of fun! Could you elaborate on the meaning behind it? How do you want customers to feel about it?

The decision to create the Gummy Bear collection stems from a desire to craft a whimsical and enchanting journey for our customers. It is more than just jewelry; it is an invitation to embark on a magical experience inspired by my personal journey. Each piece represents a unique chapter of my life, capturing both joyous moments and challenging times. By infusing each design with a touch of magic, we aim to create a heartfelt connection with our customers, allowing them to find meaning and resonance in the jewelry that accompanies them through their own life stories.

The Gummy Bear collection is a nostalgic journey into my childhood, celebrating the joy and positivity that candies, especially gummy bears, brought into my life. I believe in the transformative power of these sweet treats to uplift spirits and dispel negativity. Through this collection, I aim to translate that delightful experience into wearable daily jewelry, bringing happiness to those who wear it. The gemstone held by the bear symbolizes the heart of positivity, creating an emotional connection and a shared experience of love among our customers.

What are your hopes for the future of the jewelry landscape and how does Maazi play a part in it?

Looking ahead, I envision Maazi Jewellery as a transformative force, extending beyond the creation of beautiful and sustainable pieces. My aspiration is for Maazi to be a catalyst for positive change, inspiring a broader shift in consumer consciousness. We aim to encourage a deeper connection between individuals and their jewelry, emphasizing not only the aesthetic value but also the emotional and ethical dimensions. In doing so, Maazi seeks to contribute to a future where jewelry is not just an accessory but a meaningful reflection of personal values and leaves a positive impact on the world.
